In Minchinhampton parish register, Elizabeth's christening took place on January 4, 1852; parents abode was in Hampton Field and James was listed as "labourer" (1099, page 138). On the same day, her cousin, Sarah Ann Ludlow (g2), the daughter of William and Eliza Ludlow was christened in the parish.
In the 1861 England census, Elizabeth is listed as a 10 year old niece and "Scholar" staying at the home Thomas and Hannah Ludlow (her uncle and aunt) in Minchinhampton. In '71 census of Minchinhampton, Elizabeth, age 20, is listed as a "Stick Varnisher" and niece at Thomas Ludlow's place (along with a 2 year old "nephew" to Thomas, by the name of George Ludlow who could be an unknown youngest brother in the James Ludlow family or, perhaps, a child of Elizabeth. A "George Ludlow" born 1869 +/- 2 yrs in Gloucs is not in CRI index.)
She is not in the 1881 or 1891 England census under Elizabeth Ludlow.
Elizabeth LUDLOW married James HUMPHREYS in the first quarter of 1872. Listed as Elizabeth "Humphreys" in '81 census; as Elizabeth "Humphries" in '91 census, WHERE she is living NEXT DOOR to FANNY KING (her next younger sister!)!
Surname also spelled as HUMPHREYS or HUMPHRIS (esp. in earlier records).
In 1881 England census at "Peaches Farm" in the hamlet of Hampton Field, Minchinhampton, Gloucs, James is listed as an "Umbrella Stick Worker" along with his wife, Elizabeth, and three children. In '91 census at Hampton Field, Minchinhampton, he has the same occupation, wife Elizabeth and five children.
James married Susannah Workman Cuff in the 3rd quarter of 1899. In the 1901 census, he is shown as a "Stickworker" in Hampton Field living near George Ludlow (jml:e4a), his deceased wife's oldest son, and with Susannah and four of his children and two of Susannah's sons. James and Susanna had a son, Fred, born abt 1899.

Page Number 2Judy Edwards April 2006: Annie Mitchell her name looks like it could be Arnil in the 1891 census but in close examination it is Annie also in 1901 it is plain to see that her name is Annie. Also in the british civil records it shows that William Henry Ludlow was married to Ann Maria Hopes not Annie Mitchell she goes by Annie in the 1871 census records. I have changed my records to Ann Maria Hopes. I do not know how I got the name of Mitchell it was a mistake. I am glad to have this brought to my attention. I will be making changes for temple work to be done.
